Specially formulated cocoa might soon be considered part of a treatment plan for the prevention of cardiovascular disease in diabetics.
According to new research from the American College of Cardiology, after diabetic patients drank a special high-flavonol cocoa for one month, blood vessel function went from severely impaired to normal. Flavanols are natural compounds that are responsible for cocoa’s healthful benefits. They improve artery function and help relieve stress on the heart.
The improvement in diabetics was as large as has been observed with many common diabetic medications.
Most forms of commercially produced cocoa products have too much sugar and don't posess enough pure cocoa to provide a high number of flavanols. However, there are some products on the market that offer high concentrations of unprocessed dark chocolate (cocoa). Click here for a list of healthy dark chocolate products.
